What To Expect From Your First Swim
We all have the vision of our dogs just taking to water and swimming around gracefully for half an hour. Although this would be lovely and does happen every so often, it's far more likely to be a slow learning process. When attending your first swim, we'll be meeting you and your doggy for the first & getting to know you. We'll help find the best life jacket for all of your future swims, and begin to introduce you to the water. We'll spend time walking around the pool perimeter, playing with toys, and gradually taking that first step on to the pool ramp. We always say, if we can just get your pooches paws wet a few times during our first meet, we've done really well. If things are going great & your doggy is showing us all that they can do more, then we'll graduate to a leashed swim of about 1/3 of the pool length. The aim here is to see how they respond & to get them to understand where the pool entrance and exit is. From there, it's gently increasing the swimming distance depending on your dogs ability and confidence. Lots of hints, tips, tricks and coaching will be available from us & you're welcome to get in the water with your doggy which can help build confidence in the early days.
We always recommend bringing your doggy to swimming for at least five or six sessions on a regular and routine basis to build confidence and skill as quickly as possible, from here you can dilute down to suit you.
It wont be long before they're jumping off the edge, swimming laps of the pool & being free of the life vest.
